You don’t need to be a PM Modi fan to celebrate this distinguishing moment. After listening to PM Modi’s MSG speech in NYC 8 hours ago, it occurs to my mind that he has added another feather in his cap through this historic event.
The speech brought out his ‘talent’ and ‘fame’ in equal measure.
First, to the ‘talent’ part :
PM Modi took a clear stand on the ideal of “Development” in a kingly manner in his speech. A few things stand out prominently for his clarity of thought. 1. He squarely and fairly discountenanced the wrong/misconceived notions of too many rules/ legislations of the past while advocating a simple and quick structure removing ‘obsolete’ laws. He wants to make ‘removal of one obsolete law per day’ an accomplishment of his governance! 2. While referring to the talent of the Indian Diaspora world over, specially in the field of Information Technology, he seemingly evoked the ‘development’ of national self-consciousness among Indians delivering a clear orientation. His reference to our ‘forefathers’ being ‘snake charmers’ and the new generation twirling with the ‘mouse’ implicitly indicates a tone of his government’s policy ! Will it usher in a new period in our Academic style and practices ? 3. That he lays heavy importance to the ‘common man’ is clear from his words : ” I am a small man with humble beginnings, but I have a big dream.” His thought, words and actions are firmly centred around the pivotal advantages that India commands in this new age – a large democracy, high demographic dividend, and a rising demand – in his own words. His recently inaugurated program of ” Make in India ” is an excellent exemplification of picking an element/ingredient to fructify this thinking ! 4. He also advocated for those in the banks of the Ganges ( 40 % of people as per his statement ) an independence based on an assurance of their livelihood. 5. In his announcement of intent covering extension of several beneficial guidelines/features to the Diaspora, he possibly made an attempt to kindle and instill the nationalist thought in the minds of those in the gathering. The concessions were also an expression of preparing the ground, promoting the receptivity of the Diaspora to contribute to the path of India’s development.
Second, to the ‘fame’ part :
People generally give accord and attention to power, status, recognition and fame. Looking at the MSG gathering cheering periodically with the words, ” Modi, Modi, .. ” after each of his announcements, it appeared that people were almost baptised in strong belief. PM himself may have been amazed. In making his call to the people to join his actions, he seemed to be promising them ” Give me your hands and sail with me, I’ll develop a holy and prosperous India “. Think for a moment if his desires, actions, and aspirations can get deeply and strongly entrenched and manifested among the populace in India, he may rise to the level of glory, fame and recognition that even he may not be really conscious of. Think for a moment if his ‘ enthusiasm, motivation, and inspiration’ of the MSG speech translates into actions and fruits, he’ll rise again to the level of glory, fame, and recognition that he may not be really conscious of. Think for a moment if the ” enthusiasm, motivation, and inspiration” of his MSG speech translates into actions and fruits in terms of political and social stability in India and by extension the world, he’ll rise further to the level of glory, fame, and recognition that he may not be conscious of.
PM Modi’s speech bore his penchant and style of persuasion in the creation of ” Modi Thought “. His 12 years’ stint in Gujarat as CM creating a development path in the State may well stand him in good stead nationally enhancing his stature.
Can PM Modi show himself different as one with a strong belief in what he says and get people to faithfully take his word(s) ? From this event on, will his road to ‘fame’ be marked with white stone nationally ? Will this help to prove himself and the word he uttered in his speech, ” The seat of PM that people of India gave him is a responsibility”. Has PM Modi been able to leverage his power through this historic moment ?
Questions that will be debated in the days, months and even years to come !
