A strongly expressive and persuasive address from the President, Pranab Mukherjee, exhorting people to remember this critical period as one of transformation, change and the administration as a purposeful necessity. He recognized the common man, women, teachers, entrepreneurs and others who made this India and engaged in preserving the freedom making us feel that India is one of the powerful nations of the World.. He conveyed in simple terms what made us Indian; praised the sacrifices of everyone; and reiterated the promises made by the government to people in general terms.
The crux of his address lay in the following :
Memories of hurtful and reprehensible incidents of colonisation will go away. We need to build capacity to protect and preserve our Freedom which he termed – a celebration, and Independence – which he termed a challenge.
Our nation’s pace of journey to progress is a source of pride to our people.
In just a few strokes we can accomplish a scenario ending unwieldy procedural systems to ensure that our programs are responsive to people they are designed to promote.
Our concern for the rights of women is fitting, clear and unwavering.
Economy, even when it faces difficult moments can be shaped by suitable programs in place to lift us out of any steep fall ensuring our path to good fortune and stable growth. Judiciously aligned reduction in Government expenditure coupled with a stable monetary policy of the Central Bank could play a significant role in driving growth.
Protection of our national security and defending our secular fabric are key to good governance and our destiny. Sound strategy and national resolve to build peace are important to keep our freedom.
Once the essentials are securely placed we need a solid, adventurous, and innovative program to make the government accountable to people and to enable the system to function efficiently.
It was an address that gave hope to the citizenry valuing Freedom and Independence in every human endeavor.
We will do well to hope that four years from now another President will address the Nation eloquently with pride to emphasise that the commitments/programs met the test successfully and preserved the best hopes of all of us, Indians.
Can we have a party now ?
